Completed in 2017 after numerous construction delays and endless legal drama, Hartford’s Dunkin’ Park almost didn’t exist. But the facility quickly overcame the rocky start and, as the home of the novelly-named Hartford Yard Goats, it became one of the most celebrated venues in Minor League Baseball. With a capacity of just over 6,000, the stadium punches above its weight in both overall design and fan experience, leaving no doubt as to why it’s been consistently ranked the best Double-A ballpark in the country.

One of the park’s most talked-about features is the “Goat Pen”, an enclosure in the outfield where fans can see several live goats. While petting or feeding them is prohibited, these friendly farm animals have become permanent residents in right field and act as the beloved live mascots of the team. The Yard Goats’ actual mascot is Chew Chew, a fuzzy green goat whose name is a nod to both the city’s railroad history and the munching tendencies of goats.

The ballpark’s layout is almost as distinctive as the team’s name. Beyond the right field fences, there’s a narrow double-decker porch with netting over the lower level, which is comprised mostly of drink rail seating. Down the lines, an assortment of picnic decks and hangout patios act as the primary group spaces. The concourse also juts out a bit as it makes its way around the stadium, creating little lookouts where fans can pause for a moment and catch the game from unique angles.

Dunkin’ Park’s concession offerings are likewise one-of-a-kind. Local favorite Bear’s Smokehouse has a strong presence, with fare such as barbecue sandwiches and bacon-wrapped meatballs. Other stands are serving up creative items you won’t find elsewhere, from Meatloaf Donut Sandwiches – an experience, to be sure – to vegetarian Buffalo cauliflower.

Peruse the venue’s walls and you’ll quickly realize that Dunkin’ Park is just as much about Hartford pride as it is about baseball. Informative panels behind the plate give folks a glimpse into the city’s past, specifically highlighting its sports history, from baseball to hockey and even touching on the impact the region has had on sports media. This little read-through museum is adjacent to the park’s control room, where fans can glance through a window and see some of the live audio and video operations.

The club level is home to an even more impressive display of local athletic history. It boasts an extensive lineup of jerseys from just about every professional and collegiate sports franchise in the state of Connecticut, both past and present. This gallery of gear – interstitched with historical photos – includes uniforms from teams like the Hartford Whalers, UConn Huskies, Hartford Hawks, New Britain Rock Cats, New England Blizzard and so many more. The Yard Goats themselves are also represented by an assortment of alternate threads the team has worn over the years and by a jersey from the Colorado Rockies, their MLB affiliate.

The Goats franchise actually originated in Reading, Pennsylvania, later bouncing around New England before landing in the Hartford suburb of New Britain in 1983. Since their move into downtown in 2017, the Yard Goats haven’t had much success on the diamond, though they did make the playoffs in the 2024 campaign. The story at the gate has been the exact opposite, however, with their huge crowds and notorious gameday environment all but ensuring that Hartford will remain a staple in Double-A baseball.
