Organized over 150 years ago, baseball’s Atlanta Braves have called three different cities home and, since settling in the Peach State, they’ve entertained fans at three different ballparks. The Braves first played at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium – an icon of the concrete donut era – for thirty years before the venue was replaced by Turner Field following the 1996 Olympics. After just 19 years there, the team fled to the suburbs in 2017 and constructed state-of-the-art Truist Park, which has quickly become an MLB fan-favorite.

One of the most storied franchises in the league, the Braves first began play as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871. The team played in Beantown for over 80 years and won a single World Series title before moving to Milwaukee in 1953. Upon their arrival in Atlanta thirteen years later, the Braves played on the city’s southside at Fulton County Stadium, which saw many milestone moments.

There, the Braves clinched the city’s first-ever World Series and Hank Aaron blasted his 715th home run, officially breaking Babe Ruth’s longstanding record. His bomb sailed over the outfield wall and into the bullpen; today, that segment of fence still stands as a shrine to his incredible accomplishment in the middle of what is now a parking lot.

With the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996 showcasing Atlanta on the world stage, a massive new stadium was built just south of the ballpark in order to accommodate Olympic-sized crowds. After the Games wrapped up, the venue was reconfigured for baseball and the Braves moved in just in time for the 1997 season. Turner Field, named for cable TV mogul Ted Turner, was only used by the team for 19 years before being reconstructed yet again, this time for Georgia State football. The Braves, meanwhile, complaining of traffic, lack of transit options and the distance from the city’s richer neighborhoods, moved to brand-new Truist Park in suburban Cobb County in 2017.

Although they’ve played in many different confines over the years – eight, in fact, tied for secondmost amongst active teams – the Braves have compiled a remarkable record. They’ve won 18 total National League pennants and from 1995 to 2005, the team clinched 11 straight division titles. The Braves also lay claim to a total of four World Series championships in the modern era: one in Boston, one in Milwaukee and two in Atlanta, the latest coming in 2021 after a defeat of the Houston Astros.

Countless artifacts from throughout the club’s history are on display in Monument Garden, a museum-like alcove on the main concourse behind home plate. Front and center is a statue of Hank Aaron – the best to ever don a Braves uniform – and behind him is a “755” sculpture made out of baseball bats, a nod to his home run total. Plaques celebrating Braves Hall of Famers also line the walls, while glass cases full of game-worn jerseys and trophies galore allow fans to take a trip down memory lane.

Truist Park itself is a contemporary venue, with design elements similar to that of Target Field in Minneapolis, which predates the ballpark by seven years. The stadium can seat more than 41,000 fans and has plenty of unique visual features, like dramatic roof lighting and neon signage in the outfield. The Battery, the mixed-use district which the ballpark anchors, lies just beyond the Chop House Gate in right field and offers endless pre- and post-game entertainment options, including restaurants, bars and shops. Hotels and offices are also a part of the development.

While Turner Field may have been a gem in its own right, Truist Park has undoubtedly helped propel the Braves to new levels of success both on the field and at the gate. Nearly sold-out crowds now pack the park all throughout the season, with intimidating Tomahawk Chop chants echoing all across suburban Atlanta.
