Squeezed into historic downtown Charleston amongst palm trees and old brick buildings, TD Arena is the Lowcountry’s premier basketball venue and home of the College of Charleston Cougars. The arena lies adjacent to the school’s center city campus and consistently draws some of the best crowds in the Coastal Athletic Association due to both its central location and cozy atmosphere.

The arena opened in 2008 and features seating for up to 5,100 fans, a dramatic improvement over the cramped style of the College of Charleston’s previous home at John Kresse Arena. As one of the preeminent mid-major college basketball facilities in the Southeast, TD Arena is often the site of early-season round robin tournaments – including the acclaimed Charleston Classic – welcoming some of the sport’s biggest names down to Meeting Street each fall.

While the Cougars’ current home may be on the newer side, the team’s legacy stretches all the way back to 1898. The Cougs, however, didn’t join the ranks of Division I until 1991. Since then, they’ve established themselves as a consistent contender in the postseason, clinching their conference’s regular season title on 12 occasions. Charleston has also made 7 NCAA Tournament appearances, even advancing to the Second Round in 1997. The Maroon and White have produced one-time NBA stars such as Andrew Goudelock and Anthony Johnson, players who’ve left an indelible mark on the team’s history. Trophy cases and other artifacts line the main concourse at TD Arena, highlighting the rich history of not just the basketball squad, but also of all College of Charleston athletic programs.

As the Cougars continue to dominate at TD Arena and carry on their tradition of success, their loyal fans and the raucous Chucktown Sound band will surely continue to make the venue one of the toughest in the CAA.
