The centerpiece of the city’s promenade that runs adjacent to the Alabama River, Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium has been home to the Double-A Biscuits for more than 20 years. One of the most beloved franchises in the minor leagues due to their playful and unique name, the Biscuits have truly taken full advantage of their moniker, which lies at the intersection of two Southern staples – baseball and down home country cookin’.

The Biscuits first came to town from Orlando in 2004, where brand-new Riverwalk Stadium was waiting for them. A successful franchise down in Florida, the team continued their winning ways in Alabama, winning back-to-back Southern League championships in 2006 and 2007. The Biscuits franchise has served as a part of the talent pipeline for the Tampa Bay Rays since their Orlando days, becoming a launching pad for Major League stars like Evan Longoria, David Price, and Blake Snell, who have all spent time in Montgomery as members of the Butter and Blue.

Sandwiched in between the street and railroad tracks which run along the riverfront, Riverwalk Stadium was built to seamlessly blend in with its environment. An old railroad shed along the first base side is integrated into the ballpark footprint, serving not only as the main entrance but also as a suite area and as the home of the Club Car Bar, an open food and drink area where fans can mingle. Another century-old structure is situated on the third base side, while the wide concourse almost entirely separates the seating bowl from these two historic buildings. Just beyond the outfield, freight trains often pass by on the adjacent tracks and blow their horn to the delight of the crowd. A full-fledged amphitheater is also located inside the stadium gates, rounding out one of the most thoughtful and one-of-a-kind ballpark blueprints in the minors.

Of course, no visit to Riverwalk Stadium is complete without sampling one of their delectable, buttery biscuits. Among the options are chicken biscuits, sausage biscuits, bacon biscuits, cheese biscuits, Nashville hot chicken biscuits, pot roast biscuits and ham biscuits. Or, just wait until some biscuits are tossed your way in between innings, t-shirt cannon style.

Riverwalk Stadium isn’t just a cool ballpark, but a real gathering place for the community. And thanks to the cheesy antics of Biscuits management, the stadium features a fun atmosphere to boot, creating one of the best all-around experiences in the minor leagues right here in Alabama’s capital city.
