The entertainment anchor of the Buzzard Point neighborhood of the nation’s capital, Audi Field is heralded as home turf for the auspicious MLS club DC United. The stadium opened in 2018 and is characterized by its urban setting, steep stands and simple, modern design, creating an iconically intimate venue for one of the most prosperous teams in North American soccer.

DC United first took to the pitch in 1996 as a founding member of Major League Soccer, the only such franchise to bear a European-style moniker. For more than two decades, the club played its matches at RFK Stadium, a multi-purpose relic from the concrete donut era. At different points during their time there, DC United shared the field with the NFL’s Redskins and MLB’s Nationals, though outlasting both as a tenant. As RFK aged and the team began to seek a soccer-specific venue to call their own, plans for a new home nearly adjacent to Nationals Park began to take shape. Boasting a seating capacity of approximately 20,000, Audi Field was part of the 2010s wave in soccer-specific stadium construction.

The stadium offers a wide range of premium amenities that elevate the fan experience, including luxury field-level seating areas and the popular Heineken Rooftop, which provides sweeping views of both the pitch and the city skyline. Audi Field’s steep galleries allow fans near the top of the stands and in the corners to glimpse landmarks such as the Washington Monument and Capitol Building, making for one of the more impressive backdrops in the league. Outside the venue, the surrounding mixed-use neighborhood continues to grow and meld with the development around Nationals Park, with restaurants, bars and some green spaces helping to improve the area’s pre- and post-game liveliness.

Like most soccer stadiums, the atmosphere at Audi Field is one of its defining features. A few safe-standing sections in the north end – dedicated solely to DC United’s six supporters groups – pulse with nonstop energy at every match, waving flags and banging drums to create an intimidating environment for visiting teams.

DC United is one of the most successful clubs in the American soccer pyramid, having been 5-time participants and 4-time winners of the MLS Cup. The team made four straight appearances in the championship from 1996 to 1999, claiming three victories, and also came out on top in 2004. They’ve nabbed Supporters’ Shields on four occasions as well. Internationally, DC has captured the 1998 CONCACAF Champions Cup and is the only US-based franchise to claim the Interamerican Cup, cementing its reputation beyond just domestic competition. Legendary players such as Marco Etcheverry, Jaime Moreno, Ben Olsen, and Eddie Pope have all worn the Black-and-Red, leaving their mark on both the team’s fanbase and the national soccer scene.

While Audi Field has stood by as DC United has continue to build their own legacy, it has also hosted a significant amount of world-class soccer events. From the MLS All-Star Game to NWSL and USL matches to the FIFA Club World Cup – and every college soccer match and international friendly in between – the stadium has become a cornerstone of the city’s sports landscape.
