Nestled in the foothills of South Carolina, Clemson University is widely known for its title-winning football team, but the rural powerhouse also boasts an oft-overlooked – yet dominant – men’s basketball program. Playing out of one of the south’s finest and rowdiest gyms on occasion, the Tigers have clawed their way to the top of the ACC and college hoops here on the floor of Littlejohn Coliseum.

Opened in 1968, the venue is named after James Littlejohn, a Clemson legend who helped conceive Memorial Stadium next door along with several other athletic facilities. The facility, which after fifty years certainly started to show its age, underwent an overhaul in the mid-2010s, an undertaking that took several years and completely changed the face of the program. The renovations wrapped in 2016 and saw the installation of new videoboards, a rotation of the court and grandstand design by 90 degrees and a sparkly new stainless steel exterior. Now, the coliseum has a capacity of 9,000 – just enough for Littlejohn to maintain its intimate environment.

The venue’s contemporary look extends inside also, with sleek and bright decor in the main atrium. The concourses of the arena feature murals dedicated to both the men’s and women’s programs and their accomplishments over the years, as well as information regarding Littlejohn itself.

The Tigers have won more than three-quarters of their games at Littlejohn, earning it a spot amongst Cameron Indoor and the Dean Dome as one of the toughest places to play in the ACC. Despite their struggle for a conference crown, Clemson has still made more than a dozen at-large appearances in the NCAA Tournament. They’ve gone as deep as the Elite Eight, most recently in 2024. With their playing quality and stature on the rise, it’s only a matter of time before the Tigers make an even harder push for their first championship trophy.
