Just twenty minutes from the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and thirty minutes from Camden Yards, the future stars of the Baltimore Orioles take to the field at Prince George’s Stadium. Located in the suburban city of Bowie, this nondescript 10,000-seat ballpark is the home of the Double-A Chesapeake Baysox.

Relocated from nearby Hagerstown in 1993, the then-Bowie Baysox – renamed the Chesapeake Baysox in 2024 – were forced to play their inaugural season at the freshly vacant Memorial Stadium in Baltimore. The ‘Sox finally moved to their permanent home in Prince George’s County in the middle of the 1994 season. The ballpark is very much a product of its time, featuring the same cookie-cutter design that’s present in most minor league ballparks from that era. One unique element, however, does help the stadium stand out – an iconic orange and white lighthouse on the first-base side. A fully-functional carousel for kids sits nearby as well.

While the fan experience is certainly not bad by any means, there’s still some room for improvement. The venue’s PA system, for example, is entirely too loud for modest midweek crowds. Netting across the dugouts is also lacking – and there’s no netting at all beyond them – the absolute bare minimum to ensure fan safety. On a positive note, the concession options at Prince George’s are top-notch, with some of the more exclusive offerings including homemade cannolis and pit beef sandwiches – a Maryland staple.

Despite their very few shortcomings, Baysox games are still solid summertime entertainment for the folks who live and work in the Baltimore-Washington suburbia.
