Over the last decade, the NHL’s Stadium Series has toured some iconic outdoor venues in North America, from Soldier Field to Dodger Stadium. In its current form, primarily hosted atop both professional and college football fields, the Stadium Series has become one of the league’s marquee annual events. Fourteen venues on both coasts – and everywhere in between – have held games thus far, but there are scores of football stadiums around the nation that would also make perfect Stadium Series hosts in the coming years. With their large capacities and electric gameday vibes, these five venues deserve consideration as potential sites for the NHL’s signature outdoor showcase.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Matchup: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Nashville Predators
Atlanta may not be a hockey town – just ask the Flames and Thrashers – but surely a massive event such as the Stadium Series would stir up some buzz in the Peach State nonetheless. And with the two closest teams competing head-to-head at the elite (and climate-controlled) Mercedes-Benz Stadium, fans from out of town would surely pack the stands for this interconference matchup.

Beaver Stadium
Matchup: Philadelphia Flyers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
It’s quite honestly shocking that an outdoor game at Beaver Stadium hasn’t happened yet. The nation’s second-largest stadium is certainly ripe for a Stadium Series matchup between the beloved teams hailing from the Keystone State. Undoubtedly, the same fans who show up to cheer on their Nittany Lions will likewise turn up the heat for an electric nighttime event such as this.

Memorial Stadium (Illinois)
Matchup: Chicago Blackhawks vs. St. Louis Blues
Time to take this heated rivalry to the gridiron in Champaign, where both fanbases will clash at beautiful Memorial Stadium, home of Fighting Illini football. It’s the perfect location for a Stadium Series event – situated approximately halfway between Chicago and St. Louis – and the cozy confines at Grange Grove would be the perfect backdrop for hockey.

JMA Wireless Dome
Matchup: Buffalo Sabres vs. New York Rangers
With recent renovations bringing the JMA Wireless Dome up to snuff, it’s clear that a Stadium Series event in Syracuse is on the horizon. Hockey has been held at the Dome previously, when the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch hosted nearby Utica in front of more than 30,000 fans in 2014. A return of indoor hockey to ‘Cuse is definitely well overdue.

Lucas Oil Stadium
Matchup: Chicago Blackhawks vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
Another Midwest matchup at one of the region’s most versatile venues is a no-brainer. Lucas Oil Stadium is not only the home of the NFL’s Colts, but also hosts events such as the Big Ten Championship, the occasional NCAA Final Four and even the NFL Combine. If the crowds that turn up for these events are any indication, an indoor hockey game in Indy would be positively rocking.
