📍 Athens, Ohio
🏀 Home of Ohio Bobcats basketball
The first institution of higher education in the Northwest Territory, Ohio University is located on the banks of the Hocking River in the little city of Athens. Dominating the skyline of this hilly town is the university’s Convocation Center, a massive domed structure that’s been home to Bobcats hoops for nearly 60 years. The cavernous arena can hold more than 13,000 faithful and is home to what is often one of the most raucous atmospheres in the MAC.

Nicknamed “The Convo”, the venue first opened in 1968 – step inside, and you’ll quickly see that not much has been done in the way of upgrades since its inception. Many parts of the concourse are old, cramped and in need of repair, the restrooms are small and dated, and dirty windows encircle the building’s exterior.
But it’s not all bad. Inside the arena bowl, modern amenities and high-tech videoboards await. An oft-packed student section called the “O-Zone” runs along the length of the court too, adding spice to the gameday atmosphere. From here, “OU, Oh Yeah!” chants ring out and the band – which will sometimes form a drum circle during pauses in play – does their best to drown out the opposition. The design of the upper level, in which the last dozen or so rows get noticeably steeper, also helps add energy and drama when the house is full.

The arena’s sole unique space is the Hardwood House area, a little built-in bar where fans can hang out and grab some food and drinks either pre- or post-game. Framed photos decorate the walls and highlight the history of both the arena and the team. The Bobcat men, who began play way back in 1907, have experienced plenty of success over the years, mainly since joining the Mid-American Conference in 1946. In all, the ‘Cats have won the MAC Tournament on 7 occasions and have made more than a dozen appearances in the NCAA Tournament, making it as far as the Elite Eight in 1964. More recently, the team advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 2012, losing to #1 North Carolina in overtime.
With a passionate fan base that stands by no matter how good or bad the team on the court may be, and a rich history of success, the Bobcats will surely continue to be a steadfast member of the MAC and delight the crowds that come out to see them play at the old Convocation Center.
