Situated among the skyscrapers of uptown Charlotte, Bank of America Stadium has been home to the NFL’s Carolina Panthers since 1996. The team, centrally located in a region that’s crazy for college sports, was welcomed with open arms when the league expanded to the Carolinas and gave fans the pro football fix they’d been searching for. Through the highs and lows, fans have continually turned out to 74,000-seat stadium, taken in the fantastic skyline views and encouraged their Panthers to Keep Pounding.

Initially playing at Clemson’s Memorial Stadium during their inaugural 1995 season, the Panthers would move permanently to the Queen City the following year and cement themselves in the NFC South. Still searching for that elusive Lombardi Trophy, the team has appeared in the playoffs on half a dozen occasions and advanced to two Super Bowls. Their first run to Super Bowl XXXVIII saw them fall short against Tom Brady’s New England Patriots, while their second – and arguably more exciting – trip to Super Bowl 50 in the 2015-16 season was spoiled by Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos. These postseason campaigns have truly highlighted the special environment that Panthers fans can create in Charlotte when the guys on the gridiron are doing well. However, the team has been struggling lately, trying to once again return that amazing energy to Bank of America Stadium.

Outside the stadium gates, two massive bronze panther statues stand guard and greet fans flocking to “The Bank.” With a seating capacity of more than 74,000, the venue ranks among the larger NFL facilities and provides the potential for packed houses and a great atmosphere, fueled by the Panthers’ passionate fanbase. Since 2022, the stadium has also been home to Charlotte FC and has served as the host of many international soccer events over the years.

As Bank of America Stadium continues to host world-class events in a burgeoning Charlotte region, the city is aspiring for even more: the chance to host future Super Bowls and Final Fours. Discussions have been ongoing surrounding massive upgrades to the aging stadium, or its eventual replacement, with most talks focusing on a retractable roof or domed facility. Both the Panthers and Charlotte FC want to ensure that the stadium will remain competitive with newer NFL venues like those in Los Angeles and Nashville, also offering more fan-friendly amenities and better views of the field from the concourse. In the past, The Bank has been renovated many times – including enormous new video boards in both end zones and upgraded lighting – but an even bigger overhaul that will forever change the face of the stadium may be on the horizon.

While the future of Bank of America Stadium is still uncertain, one thing is clear. With the city of Charlotte angling to become the premier sports destination in the Southeast and the dedicated fanbase to go with it, the Panthers will remain an immovable force for the sport of football in the Carolinas for years to come.
