Featuring a unique design and breathtaking vistas of the San Francisco Bay, Oracle Park has become one of Major League Baseball’s finest gems over the last quarter century. Few ballparks can match the sheer beauty and charming character of these contemporary confines, with retro brickwork and an iconic California style prevalent throughout the stadium. The proud home of the San Francisco Giants since the turn of the millennium, Oracle Park only gets more and more impressive as the years wear on, aging like fine Napa Valley wine.

A 180-degree turn from their windy multi-purpose digs at old Candlestick Park, the dedication of Oracle Park in 2000 was a welcome relief for players and fans. The waterfront venue boasts a comfortable design that gives Giants fans – no matter where they’re seated – a great view of both the action and the environs. Aside from the glistening waters of the Bay, downtown San Francisco and the Bay Bridge are also visible from different parts of the stadium. Inside the park, an iconic 80-foot Coca-Cola bottle and an enormous baseball glove dominate the concourse in left field, with the former doubling as a giant slide for adventurous kids to enjoy.

Due to its advantageous location on the bayfront, the ballpark also uniquely features a secluded cove just beyond the Levi’s Landing bleacher arcade in right field. Christened McCovey Cove in honor of Giants legend Willie McCovey, this small inlet sits about 362 feet from home plate and, with the outfield wall being as short as it is, these murky waters have seen their fair share of action. More than 160 home runs have sailed into the cove over the last few decades, with each of these “splash hits” keenly tracked via a counter at Levi’s Landing. Balls that land in the water are highly prized and, on any given day, several folks in kayaks and boats can be seen hoping to scoop one up. One such individual, McCovey Cove Dave, has made a name for himself by attending hundreds of ballgames in his kayak and snagging nearly 50 soaking wet dingers. This incredible one-of-a-kind spot and its backstory is a testament to the passion of the Giants fanbase, who have turned the cove into an integral part of the Oracle Park experience.

Adding even more to the park’s San Francisco charm is the vintage cable car that sits next to the centerfield scoreboard. Once run on the Powell & Hyde Line in the early 20th century, this veritable icon of the city was re-numbered 44 – once again in honor of Willie McCovey – when it arrived at Oracle Park at the turn of the millennium. Accessible to all able-bodied fans, the cable car makes for a great photo opportunity on game days.

Since arriving in the City by the Bay in 1958, the Giants have captured six National League pennants and have won 3 World Series titles. The team has retained some of baseball’s greatest players, including Barry Bonds and Willie Mays, the latter of whom won a World Series with the team in 1954 when they were still in New York, but failed to repeat the feat after moving west. The Giants didn’t actually win a World Series title until 2010 – despite advancing to the series on three occasions prior – ending their 56-year California championship drought. In spite of their initial struggles in San Francisco, the team is still one of the winningest franchises in American sports.

Now, with a great product on the field and a stellar ballpark to match, the Giants boast perhaps the best gameday experience in the Major Leagues. With all of its modern amenities and neat San Francisco touches, Oracle Park is definitely one of baseball’s crown jewels.
