First taking the ice in 1993 and entertaining folks in the Holy City ever since, the South Carolina Stingrays are the longest running non-relocated franchise in the ECHL. Their loyal Lowcountry fanbase is just one reason why the Stingrays have been able to maintain their hold on the Charleston market, along with their premier digs at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Located in the suburbs of what is arguably South Carolina’s most historic city, the North Charleston Coliseum is more than just a hockey venue. In addition to Stingrays games, the arena hosts a diverse lineup of concerts, shows and other sporting events that draw visitors from across the region. Boasting a maximum capacity of over 13,000, the Coliseum holds about 10,500 for hockey; unfortunately, parts of both end zones in the upper level are often closed off to spectators due to lower-than-expected attendance.

Despite their sometimes lackluster crowds, the Stingrays have a very devoted base that loves to come out and cheer on their boys. The team has had some amazing on-ice success – a major factor in their enduring popularity – winning three Kelly Cups in 1997, 2001 and 2009 on their way to becoming one of the ECHL’s most decorated franchises. To date, the Stingrays continue to be a perennial playoff contender.

Postseason accomplishments often translate to a well-maintained venue, and the North Charleston Coliseum is proof positive of this concept. Although it isn’t much to look at, it’s a spacious and comfortable arena with plenty of modern amenities, such as the large concession-filled spaces on each side of the building that act as roomy hangouts. A good spot to socialize before or during games, these areas seem to be a hybrid between a food court and convention center and are built off of the main concourse to allow fans free-flowing access.

The South Carolina Stingrays have found the winning formula here in the Lowcountry, focusing on their on-ice triumphs and letting the ever-growing fanbase follow. And though it lacks that special charm that the city itself is known for, the North Charleston Coliseum will surely serve as a reliable home for Stingrays hockey for years to come.
