Opened in 1989 as a barebones ballpark with bleachers made of metal and concrete, Virginia Tech’s English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park has been the reliable home of the hammerin’ Hokies for almost 40 years. Tucked away in the rolling hills of Blacksburg, English Field underwent a massive overhaul in 2018, transforming the park from a drab diamond into one of the ACC’s finest facilities.

Named for decades-long athletics benefactors and Tech alumni E. R. and Ruth English, the stadium is able to hold more than 4,000 fans throughout its different seating areas. The nearly 1,200 fixed seats behind the plate do not actually make up the largest spectator area at the park; that title belongs to the terraced berm on the third base side known as “The Hill.” With around a dozen long steps allowing for a close-up view of the field, The Hill is a popular place from which to watch a game.

Other unique viewing spots include the shaded Terrace Club premium area on the first-base side and the nearby field-level patio, typically available to groups and parties.

English Field also has some fantastic food options, outclassing most of its ACC peers in this category. On the menu are fried pickles, Chicago-style hot dogs and even fried chicken in a waffle cone, among other offerings. A food truck on the first-base side serves up some great burgers and garlic fries as well.

Featuring dugouts and a facade adorned with the iconic Hokie stone that’s found all around the Virginia Tech campus, English Field is one of the more refined and relaxing ballparks. The home of the Hokies provides a truly serene college baseball atmosphere here in the mountains of scenic southwest Virginia.
